Service 2 costs

Hi all. Our van is due its number 2 (4 year) service in Feb 2023. Before I get a quote from our local dealer, just wondered what sort of costs others have paid. We've got to get it serviced by a main dealer as we have taken out extended warranty. Thanks

There are loads of conversations on here regarding the B Service. Prices seem to vary wildly from £800 to £1500 (which was our first quote) the dealer reduced it twice before I agreed - nothing was changed regarding the work carried out they just applied discounts. So it’s well worth getting a quote. We don’t have the extended warranty but feel the benefits (mb breakdown cover) that come when MB service the car saves us on poor and expensive breakdown / home start cover.. it will aslo be reflected in desirability and value on resale - if that ever happens… if we and don’t move it on, keep it for decades then I’m sure we will see the benefits down the line.

I'm in the same place, service B in January. I had two different prices from the same dealer for the first one so shopping around with dealers plus approved garages is my plan. I've also got the extended warranty, so need to keep that valid.

Thanks Steve B. I'm going to start phoning around this week. What quotes have you had so far?

Thanks Method7. Out of interest, what did you end up paying? Just trying to get an idea of what is a good or bad quote for when I start phoning around!

£824.08 including the MOT... my initial quote was £1400 i just said thats far too much i know several MP owners who have paid much less than that.. this was back in June but the actual bill was less than the twice modified quote.

I think with inflation running high and dealers thinking of a number and doubling it, £850 is going to be a good result if we can get it!

Worth noting the extended warranty IPID says “Servicing must be carried out in accordance with vehicle manufacturer’s guidelines and use genuine manufacturer’s parts, or parts of an equivalent specification.” - suggests that there’s no need to have it serviced at a dealer..

I started my search yesterday, and looking at MB capable garages that have access to the IT systems for registering service completion, plus use genuine service parts. Looks like lower than £800 is possible for service B, a bit early to be confident yet though.

We had ours on a service plan with MB. It was £40 per month which for the two year service interval equates to £960. Add in the free break down cover which you get with MB when you have it serviced and there’s not much in it. It gives peace of mind of a proper MB service record and also spreads the cost over the two years.

Found a MB specialist in Nottingham, not a dealership but looks and feels very competent, and is £649 incl VAT. They have the software for updating the service record and follow the parts/consumables requirements of the warranty. The gearbox service parts add nearly £200 to the bill. Booked for a couple of weeks time.

does your service include the gearbox? - what about breakdown cover for two years how much does that add to your bill?

Yes, that was the most expensive bit. I opted for the extended warranty which includes breakdown cover. There is no low cost way of running a vehicle like the MP, other than hope for the best. You can get a service quote for lower but I wasn't confident of those garages adherence to the service requirements.

I have had 2 Vitos over the past 17 odd years. The old one we had for over 12 years and on average i suppose it cost me about £1000 a year... tried all sorts to lower the costs, local specialist a commercial service department but always ended up going back to MB - they are just down the road from me so its easy to drop the van off and leave it with them... Service wise the MP has proved to be a great saving on this, I don't suppose its cost much more than £1000 in the (nearly) 5 years we have had it... its eaten more tyres than the old Vito with standard profile wheels - all replaced because of puncture damage.. and one cracked rim - repaired - we fell into a collapsed drain in Scotland - lost both tyres on the near side - MB inspected it and replaced the tyres but nearly 5 years later a crack appeared on the inside rim on what was the front wheel - now on the rear... Three punctures - 4 tyres.. that adds up although i now have a tyre in stock...

There is some good advice on here re tyre pressures as mine all went quite early and at the edges first. I've had my pressures at the top end (45) this time to see if it makes a difference. You've been unlucky with punctures but I'm not tempting fate. Not looking forward to replacing the leisure battery, but that for another day and a different thread!

Really does depend where you live.I found an amazing garage in Chew Magna/Windford near Bristol. The garage is set up as an approved/authorised MB garage, using the right tools, editing the digital log book and ensuring all parts are genuine MB parts and correct lubricants. My B service in November was £450 including MOT and new additional brake fluid

Really really good and they know their stuff.
I'll get the Hydraulic Gear Oil done next November (yr 5) at £260. Not sure where you are, but be fair, it'll be worth a drive !!

Just a quick note re servicing costs in general and in particular, the importance of shopping around....

My MP is due it's first service - the 'a service' - and I have been quoted between 340 and 640 by different main stealers within a 45 min drive of Southampton... That's 15 mins well spent firing off emails!!

With that cost difference it’s worth driving up here (Winford) near Chew to get it serviced
