@BobbyMillar agreed, you make some good and salient points, but the I'm not sure the DVLA treat this type of vehicle classification as all being van 'conversions,' they simply look at what's before them and decide if it meets the criteria.
Professional converters who source brand new vehicles from the manufacture for conversion legitimately register them a Motor caravans, even though there are no fancy exterior decals and have a pop top, so why don't MB.
@RFT god knows the DVLA deserve most of the abuse thrown at them, but I feel the main culprit here is MB
