Solution to roof noise

Lots of posts on the noise from the roof when driving. Squeaks mostly.

Solution found: apply “dry” bike chain lube to the catch and mechanism above the central console. Just in that single point.

Not wd40 - or spray stuff - use proper drive train lube.

No more noise for about 6 months.

Wow, my squeaky roof has been driving me mad from new. Instant cure.

Thanks for the advice, amazing result.

Hi Paul,
my MP is in with the dealer at the moment, it’s developed a vibration at low speed under the passengers seat, so no photo at the moment,

But I will do my best to describe the location. First list the roof up a small amount so that you can access the under side of the roof at the front on a stepladder.

On the underside of the roof in the centre you will see a spring and pin mechanism. I applies the lubricant to all of the mechanism, I used a small brush. I also applied lubricant to the black receptor on the roof again with a brush, I lubricated both the outside and the inside.

I used Squirt Chain Lube 120ml is a wax based, long lasting dry bike chain lube

I hope this helps

Could somebody please get more specific on the exact spot we should apply the Dry Chain Lube???

Could anybody post a picture?

Thank you so much!!!
Mike

u dont have to lucricate it if you dont like grease near ur canvas. ofc a little lub is fine.

Mercedes fixed mine with some fleece tape sized 5*10cm where the locking rod comes out.
at least that solution is not so messy......

Thank you so much for your reply fleece tape solution sounds much better thanks for the idea, I just to understand exactly the spot that we have to remedy. Maybe language doesn't help (I am from Greece) That is why if somebody could post a picture would help me a lot.

Thanks again, great forum with a lot of usefull info!

cant really make a pic this time of year, but when u see the locking mechanism ,u just place the patch with the locking pin in middle of the small side of the patch, next to the squarebox. of the whole locking system. i think its enough to cover the area of the rod when its extended.

u place it on the roof itself.

Ok I will try it , thank you so much!

So I have applied dry chain Lube at the lock mechanism.please note I have the manual roof. Unfortunately the noise is not coming from there. I hear it at the back. It is a cracking noise when the road is bumpy or whenever there is a big turn. Maybe it is normal but I don't remember this noise a while ago...

if its an old car the rubber list can be worn maybe.... you could try and look at the arms lifting the roof maybe. on the new ones theres a pin which can be adjusted up or down. which can make the adjust the roofs closed position.

or u could try and identify the exact spot maybe and pull off the rubber list abit there and make it bigger when regluing somehow maybe... D

first i would make sure the roof is not cracked or anything though. D
