Marco Polo known faults and issues thread

Morning all,

I’m currently shopping Marco Polo’s and as part of my due diligence I was pretty shocked to come across the “bubbly roof” fault that is still very active.

I thought it would be useful to create a thread for known issues and faults that are starting to appear as these vehicles age. Any solutions would be useful to hear too.

Not as prevalent but a lot of reports on here of rear brakes that squeal when driving. The squeal disappears when applying the brakes so isn’t the brake wear indicator. In my case and others it was the calipers getting corroded and binding along with a corroded lip on the discs. Remedy is to clean the calipers so they fully disengage and to replace the rear discs and pads.

Interesting, as MP is based on a V-Class. I wonder if the taxi driver community would have a suggestion for this fault, doubt they could live with this type of problem. Will delve into this.

There is a suggestion that this is caused by lack of use. If the campervan isn’t a daily driver or it is because of lack of use during COVID lockdown. If that’s the case then taxi drivers may not experience this problem given the vehicles would likely to be used heavily.

Morning all

I have this issue on my V300 2021. As I just mentioned on a previous thread, we have done just close to 40,000 miles in the last two years and also replaced the disc and pads a month ago. Its rather annoying to be fair and can be quite loud. I am going to strip them down and have a look when I have a minute but I dont think its just caused by lack of use

Mine squealed. Horrible . Replaced discs and pads (needed anyway) and the squeal has thankfully now gone. Mechanic said probably brake dust.

I had a very similar problem on my Mercedes based Hymer. The suggestion was is was down to lack of use, which in my case was true, a lot of sitting around either on my drive or on campsites. It got so bad at one point that I call the Mercedes road side emergency number and the Mercedes dealership at Aberdeen sent a chap out who fixed it on the road side, annoying only one side as I didn't mention in my phone call that both sides were affected. You could have cooked breakfast on the hub it had got so hot. Basically it is the auto adjust of the callipers, it gets very dry and thereby corroded so does not return to a position where they are not binding on the brakes, this through lack of use. Once taken apart and 'greased' so that they are free to move easily back and forth the problem is cured. It was, and once I had my local garage do the other side all was well.

Hi - the roof is the main consistent issue, but I did have the brake squeal, strip down and rebuild sorted it. Front tyre edge scrubbing is another thing that is annoying but tyre pressure management helps.

In many countries the brake pad sensor is called a “squealer” and is local to the pad that wears the most during braking. It’s essential to fit to the correct side and keep an eye on pad thickness. Often the squeal is the sensor rubbing the disc.
These MPs are a lovely thing to drive and use but if pushed for me the issues in a relatively short ownership of the MP are:

1 Paranoia about Electric Roof operation, which is very battery condition sensitive. The ‘open window’ request is also annoying, sometimes required even if the door is open) -
2 Leisure battery per se. I don’t really think the split charge systems is the best. The leisure battery never charges to max via the alternator needs a day on EHU. Looking at upgrade to lithium and B2B unit and maybe solar.
3 Annoying warning signs on dash, this is just a modern Mercedes fact of life.. Oil level sensitivity with too high warning. Take a coffee break, ABS warning after driving over potholes (sensors checked and OK suggest change or carry spares as will put engine in limited LIMP mode, I’m going to get a Merc code reader.
3 Rear seat operation. Make sure you know where the rear seat position “Reset” button is. Location varies with age.
4 Fridge temperature sensor is a failure point. When failed, the thermostat goes open circuit and runs flat-out as a freezer and flattens the battery. There is a warning on the control unit to say it’s failed. The fridge is a Dometic unit made for Westfalia and whilst DIY replacement is doable not easy and £75 for sensor. We also added a small Blue Tooth £10 temperature transmitter for peace of mind so we know what settings refer to in terms of true temperature on our phones.

I've suffered a broken fridge temperature sensor, snapped seat sensor cables (replaced under warranty), a dead leisure battery (they degrade and its time had come - I installed a solar panel and since them the leisure battery lives a happier life). On a couple occasions the rear seat did not extend completely; easy to fix with the reset button after you know it.

Also, my van and many others seem to suffer early and uneven tyre wear.

I can't say about the electric roof since mine is manual. No issues with it.

On the other hand, I've driven it on the worst african tracks one can imagine a 2WD Marco Polo can cross and never got an ABS warning.

Still looking for the new seat reset button. I've grated my knuckles several times. Anyone able to help? Appreciate everything you've already posted. May just be that I'm exceptionally dim

July 2017 MP. UK. Can't find the button behind passenger side rear seat. Driver side seat is not levelling down, sits about an inch or so higher. It's usually used as just a giant dog bed but I'm planning on doing the berry hill to applecross nc 500 stretch before Christmas. So don't fancy chilling in the poptop. Annoying!

How old is the car. Mine on 2018 was here. From the Rear of seat. Left hand side. Lift the bottom falcro cover. See switch.

Thank you so much pal for your quick reply. I'll look in the morning as I am parked up on the street. I've seen a similar photo before so it may be that I'm just pathetically dim . I'll let you know the outcome of my endeavours

On the bright side I just got a replacement leisure battery so for poptop and lights it's party time again
