Tailgate Not Opening

The starter battery on our 220D MP died while we were out of the UK for several weeks and was replaced by Mercedes Assist today. Unfortunately now I cannot open the tailgate with either the remote or by pressing the button, the rear window also does not open. In my attempts to revive the battery yesterday I attached a CTEK MXS 5.0 to the dead battery and was aware of what sounded, to my untrained ears, like the sound of a relay switch repeatedly switching on and off somewhere towards the rear of the van.Any thoughts will be gratefully welcomed .

We had two separate issues preventing the opening of the rear tailgate:
Issue 1: The sequence of events was:
I tried to open the glass section of the rear tailgate.
It refused to open, which I subsequently established was the window seal was stuck to the glass making it difficult to open.
The attempt to open the rear glass triggered a switch & interlock that then prevented opening of the main tailgate.

Issue 2:
The passenger side front wheel speed sensor failed. This interlocked both the rear tailgate & sliding door.

Issue 1 was resolved by pushing the tail gate glass until the open /close switch was remade

Issue 2 was resolved by replacing the speed sensor

Thanks Ragga it turned out to be Issue 1.
It also meant that the van behaved as if all the doors were not closed and so internal lights etc remained on after closing .
