Electrical problem with rear seat.

I picked up my MP last November and have had a few weeks travelling in it already. Last week I slid the table back after using it and it pulled the rear seat cable out from its socket. I reinstalled the plug but it then blew a fuse. After a bit of playing and a new fuse, I managed to get the seat to work except that one side will go down to into the bed position but then cannot be raised again regardless of which button I push. I have contacted MB and they have booked me in (earliest date was 23 May at a dealer 70 miles away) but i wondered if anyone else had this problem.
I'm hoping that once they have fixed it, this will not be a recurring problem. Note to self to take more care when sliding the table back into place.

I feel that the bench is over engineered to be honest.

If it were manual it would be more reliable in the long term, not use any battery power, and be lighter to lift if removing or sliding.

I agree for converting to the bed it’s a bit ponderous but I quite like the idea of being in the back and being able to recline slightly at the push of a button

Previous issues...text of two relevant mails follows, there is a RESET BUTTON for rear seat, this may help, worth a shot...copy of text -

1. Just got the new marco polo last week but still cant get one of the rear seats flat. On p29 of the owners manual its states that this means there is an electronic fault and you have to press a reset button located under the cover in the extension of the interior head restraint bar. I really cant find this. Has anyone else found it or knows where it is . I can not feel a button, and you can't actually remove the cover fully at the base of the rear seats to look as they are not fully removable. Will be sleeping on an incline otherwise! There is an online interactive mercedes manual which is more up to date and shows that the button is under the through loading facility which is the smaller compartment under the rear seat which you lift up for storing long items, but I can't see the reset button there either!
2. I had the same issue when i picked up my van. There is a button under there. I climbed in behind the back seat and fiddled behind the left back seat for about ten minutes until I found it. I had to squeeze my hand behind the leather flap. Hopefully next time it won't take me so long to find

We have had similar electrical difficulties with the seats that Matt described back in April. The seats go down but don't come back up unless you unplug and replug in, and then they only come up in very small increments (and you have to keep pressing the button). Our dealership has been great and has tried testing all the various components of the seats to get it fixed, but so far has not had any success. The best they have done so far is to get the seats working up and down but they are coming up in 3 second increments, so not in a continual motion. Please can someone (who has fully functional seats!) confirm that both seats need one button push, held in, and the seats should come up/down in one continual motion? This is a really serious problem if the dealership can't get this fixed and I'm fearing the worst... A video of the seats going up/down would be even better - you would have my eternal gratitude!!!

Yes, my seats go up and down in one continous motion as long as you keep the button pressed.

We have another problem. We used reset button, but it start smoke from the engine of bench folder. We had to cut cable. Probably short circuit. That is why I ask for manual folding/unfolding.

Gosh - this doesn't sound good... Hope you can sort it....
By way of an update following my 19 July post we have very sadly decided to give our Marco Polo back; it's a real shame because we loved it and had lots of summer camping plans... After 2 and a half weeks and various components (ordered from Germany) the service dept still couldn't fix the seat 'going-up-in-small-increments' problem that I mentioned previously. The issue was that the MB computer recognised the vehicle as a V Class and all the V Class components in it, but it didn't recognise the parts relating to the Westfalia conversion . The seat being a major Westfalia component! So the service dept were testing each component without the aid of the computer - ie by trial and error. Eventually they couldn't isolate the problem to seat and admitted it could be something with the van. I would say the customer service has been excellent and I got regular and detailed updates from the service dept but after 3 weeks and no fix we decided we had no alternative; we couldn't keep a new product that was faulty and couldn't be fixed. I hope all the Marco Polo owners out there have fully functional seats!!

Dear Ian et al

I think it apt to complete the saga. I drove to Cambridge on Sat 19th January to collect AF18.

Despite having demanded and received a video of the rear seat demonstrating normal operation, when I attended there was a residual malfunction. One half of the seat over rotated about 20 degrees over horizontal when lowering. It then would only rise with 5/6 stops on the way up. Pressing the reset on the rear fixed the over rotation ( if anyone encounters this) and brought the two halves into synch.

However, the faltering rise was not rectified.

The solution has consisted of MB Cambridge taking the entire seat assembly out of the demonstrator which arrived this week and transplanting it from the donor. It works perfectly for now. MB Cambridge to be applauded for not asking me to persevere. I would have rejected the vehicle on the spot had they not acted quickly and decisively to fit an entirely new seat. To their credit they accepted that the vehicle was not going to sell unless they did this and fought an internal warranty battle.

Now trying to figure out all the systems !

Hi

I have a similar problem with my rear bench not getting to horizontal position. My vehicle is based on Viano 2013 model but there is no reset switch for the rear seat on mine. Anyone can help me with getting it reset so that I can have a flat bad?

For those that contributed to this thread (many years ago!)... Did anyone reach a solution other than transplanting an entire seat unit?! I have the same issue on my 1 year old MP and with 2 weeks until our summer trip I am desperately hoping for an interim fix at least to avoid cancelling summer!

Many thanks

Have you seen this online guide? Works on ipad.

If u search for reset and seat it should show you the section how you can find and use the reset button.
Thanks PMN

Unfortunately even the reset button isn't doing the trick. It will reset one seat but the problematic one just comes up a few cms then stops.... And then the reset button won't activate for a few minutes. Means it's an hour job to put the bed away :Headbang:

I’ve just read your other thread And see you’ve tried it already. Sounds like something isn’t right as the trip switch isn’t working for you either.

So, I have an update should anyone ever be suffering a similar problem.

Firstly, with MB unable to provide any assistance before my summer trip, I was thankfully able to establish a workaround that meant the lower bed was useable...

The reset button was serving only to bring the seats up by a couple of cms before needing 5 minutes to time out before it could be used again. I got around this by unplugging the curly cable and plugging it in again. After each cycle the reset butting became live again, and so in this way (with 2 people) the seats could be raised in a minute or so by keeping the reset butting held down while unplugging and plugging back in the seats. So far so functional, but not ideal.

On my return, MB had ordered a new seat motor and control unit in accordance with the technical case they had raised with MB Germany. I'm very pleased to report that the seat motor was enough to rectify the problem, and all now appears to be fully functional once again.

I'm hugely glad to have had all this work done under warranty and will be keeping everything crossed that it was a one off!!
