Great driving roads for your Marco Polo.

Not really a post about my MP, more about where we've been together.....probably need a travel forum?
Any way I'll kick it off with a couple of roads that I've felt have provided outstanding driving experiences. Please add yours so that we can build up a knowledge base for future trips.
1. Today we drove the SS185 in Sicily from Taormina to Vigliatore. I don't think it is a well known drive but the reason we loved it was the great road surface (unusual in Sicily), lots of altitude, tight twisty bends with lots of switchbacks and the great panoramas that it provides of Mt Etna. A great couple of hours driving.

I didn’t think I had anything to add to this, nothing exotic anyway but it did get me thinking.. I don’t want to pollute the good intention of this so I might just save it for a tweet or something.

Please go ahead and pollute away.... Your pollution may be someone's gold dust.

I particularly like driving down Southampton Road in Salisbury.

A one mile prison cell, single carriageway with central reservation and a roundabout at each end, you can’t turn right, you can’t overtake. A conveyor-belt to hell..

The litter, the broken street furnature and occasional burning oil drum in the zombie apocalypse this place would be king.

But in the MP, sat in my armchair with the heater and air conditioning ticking over, sweet music in the background the sensation is surreal, almost cinematic.

Urban filth, pedestrians plying chicken, Mr Angry angry in his Dacia Duster, all quite simply extras to my very own interactive movie. I like to slow down and let people out, stop to allow desperate families cross the road.

It’s a poo hole but a much more interesting poo hole when viewed from the MP.

A great road driven today was the "Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse" It costs €36.50 for the privilage but every cent is a cent well spent. It is an absolutely stunning drive......Is that my brakes that I can smell

The Grossglockner high alpine road is just the sort of route I want to be taking my MP on. It passes close to some of my favourite ski haunts. They look so different in summer and it’s great to have stop and take a walk to enjoy the mountains, even if it’s just for a short break from the driving.

mptripsaway, you have now landed me with a nice problem. I am wondering whether I can divert that way when I head south in July. I would be interested to know some of your stopovers.
Enjoy the rest of your trip.

From memory of a bike trip in France last year the N85 route Napoléon was fantastic. Grenoble to Grasse incl. the Verdon Gorge iirc were amazing roads with breathtaking views.

A different journey in the MP than on the bike but wow the scenery.

Check out route Napoléon on some of the organised motorbike trip pages for some pics and descriptions.

Should have some gpx files here somewhere if anyone is interested.
